The Loft Your Ball Sees Is Not the Number on the Sole

A 10.5-degree driver almost never presents 10.5 degrees to the ball. Shaft bend, hand position, attack angle and where you catch the face all conspire to deliver something else entirely, and that delivered figure is what decides your launch, your spin and whether the ball holds a green in dry Mojave air. We fit that number, then build the club that produces it.

Bays run from 7:00 in the morning because summer afternoons on the range here are worth nobody's money. Sundays are assembly days — no fittings, just the bench.

Delivered Loft Is the Only Loft That Pays You

Stamped loft is a manufacturing statement. It describes the head sitting on a bench, square and stationary, in a condition that never occurs during a golf swing. The moment a club is swung, the shaft bends forward, the hands arrive somewhere ahead of or behind the ball, and the face presents an angle that can sit three or four degrees away from what is engraved on the sole.

Our whole method starts there. We measure what the face actually shows the ball, decide what it ought to show given your speed and the flight you need, and then work out which component changes close that gap without wrecking anything else in the bag.

The Shaft Owns More of That Angle Than the Head Does

Swap heads and you change roughly what you expect to change. Swap shafts and the delivered angle can move further than a two-degree loft adjustment would take it, because the tip section governs how far the head lags behind your hands on the way down. A soft tip adds presented loft. A firm tip holds it back.

That is why we profile candidate shafts in bands before a single ball leaves the mat. Sorting by stiffness distribution first removes most of the guesswork, and it means the live testing that follows is confirming a decision instead of hunting for one.

Nevada Air Changes What Counts as a Good Number

The valley floor sits around two thousand feet, the humidity spends most of the year in single digits, and summer surface temperatures do things to ball behaviour that a fitting done in a sea-level indoor bay simply cannot account for. Thin, dry air carries a golf ball further and lets it hold less of its spin.

Practically, that means a spin figure a fitter in a wetter climate would call ideal can leave you with a ball that runs through the back of every green from May to September. We fit descent angle against the conditions you actually play in, not against a chart printed somewhere else.

Four Stages, No Sales Pitch in Any of Them

Nobody here works on component commission, so the order below never bends toward a particular brand. It bends toward whatever closes the gap between your current delivered loft and the one your flight window wants.

  1. Baseline on Your Own Clubs

    You hit what is already in your bag while we record delivered loft, attack angle, strike pattern and dispersion. Nothing is swapped, nothing is sold, and the numbers become the reference every later change is measured against.

  2. Bench Reading of the Incumbent

    Your current club goes on the analyser and the loft-lie machine. Frequently the explanation for a complaint is right there — a lie angle two degrees off, a shaft that reads nine cycles away from its neighbours, a grip built up unevenly at some previous shop.

  3. Component Shortlist by Bend Profile

    Candidate shafts are pulled by their measured stiffness distribution rather than the letter printed on them. Three or four make it to the mat. Testing six is how sessions turn into three-hour fatigue experiments that prove nothing.

  4. Build, Verify, Record

    Assembly happens in-house. The finished club is re-read for frequency, swingweight and loft before it leaves, and every one of those figures lands on the spec card you take home.
